The Milton Acorn Memorial People’s Poetry Award is important.
Given in recognition of accessibility: the award came about when Milton Acorn was passed over for the
Governor General's Award -- our top honour -- in favour of some more academic
poet. The award was created by a group of poets to honour poets whose work
can truly be said to speak to the ordinary citizen, work written in the
tradition of people's poets such as Acorn, Dorothy Livesay, or Carl Sandburg.
